Students throughout the Greater Toronto Area are honoring influential Black professionals across various sectors in a new exhibit for Black History Month. The 'We Are Canada' exhibit, which opened recently, features essays and photographs created by students highlighting leaders within the Black community.
This initiative, run by the Lifelong Leadership Institute, aims to expose students to career paths and progression, fostering inspiration. Participants learn about the wide-ranging involvement of Black individuals in numerous Canadian professions. Student Bemi Esisi emphasized the importance of communication and passion, noting the significance of seeing future possibilities represented.
Oakville student Michael Aikens shared his excitement about meeting Toronto Symphony Orchestra CEO Mark Williams through the exhibit. Aikens expressed profound gratitude for the opportunity to learn from Williams, who is the first Black CEO of a major orchestra. Williams acknowledged the reciprocal nature of the experience, highlighting his responsibility to give back and shine a light on the achievements of Black Canadians.
