9 Mar
Summary
- Police investigation links academic stress to at least three student deaths.
- Six students died on campus between December 2024 and February 2026.
- Suicide contagion is a suspected factor in the recent spate of deaths.

Between December 2024 and February 2026, BITS Pilani's Goa campus tragically experienced the deaths of six students. A police investigation suggests academic stress was a significant factor in at least three suicides. Initial findings indicate four suicides, one natural death, and one case still under investigation.
The probe revealed that early suicides occurred during exam periods, with investigators citing stress over exams and personal issues. A 20-year-old student's death on December 10, 2024, was attributed to academic stress, emotional distress, relationship issues, and parental pressure. Another student died by suicide on March 5, 2025, due to academic concerns and anxiety over performance.
Further incidents include a May 1, 2025, suicide linked to deteriorating academic performance and a suspected natural death on August 16, 2025. A suicide on September 4, 2025, was related to a personal health challenge from a relationship issue. An additional suicide occurred on February 1, 2026, currently under investigation, with college authorities noting the student was managing a personal health challenge.
Goa's Home Department previously reported that five unnatural deaths in 2024 and 2025 all occurred during exam periods, with four linked to exam stress and one to personal issues. A district-level monitoring committee report suggested 'suicide contagion' as a possible reason for the increased fatalities.
In response, BITS Goa's management has implemented measures including streamlined academic content, expanded counseling with professional psychologists, a 24x7 helpline, faculty sessions, and weekly psychiatrist consultations.
