Summary
- BHU partnered with 18 private hospitals.
- Employees, pensioners receive treatment at CGHS rates.
- MoUs are valid for three years initially.

Banaras Hindu University (BHU) recently entered into agreements with 18 private hospitals in Varanasi. These Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) ensure that BHU employees, pensioners, and their dependents can access medical treatment at Central Government Health Scheme (CGHS) rates. This initiative addresses a persistent need expressed by the university's staff for more accessible healthcare.
Vice-chancellor Prof. Ajit Kumar Chaturvedi emphasized the university's commitment to enhancing the scheme for seamless healthcare services. He assured that measures would be implemented to ensure the system's sustainability and credibility, including a dedicated channel for addressing any implementation challenges. A digital verification system is also under development to allow hospitals to quickly confirm the status of BHU beneficiaries.
The university has also identified 40 CGHS-empanelled hospitals in major cities like Delhi-NCR, Mumbai, and Kolkata, based on their infrastructure and accreditations. These MoUs are set to be in effect for three years, with provisions for expanding the healthcare network. The new arrangement eliminates the previous financial burden where beneficiaries had to cover costs exceeding CGHS reimbursement rates, ensuring treatment is provided solely at CGHS rates.
