SEN School Places Crisis: Belfast Parents Devastated
20 Jun
Summary
- Eight Belfast families told no SEN school places exist for their children next year.
- Children finishing P4 at SEN schools face uncertainty for further education.
- Education Authority cites capacity issues, parents feel let down.

Parents of children requiring special educational needs (SEN) support in Belfast have expressed deep distress after being informed that no school places are available for their children next academic year. At least eight families have been told that SEN schools across the city are either at full capacity or unable to cater to their children's specific requirements.
These children are due to transition from Oakwood School and Assessment Centre, which caters to pupils up to Primary 4 (P4). However, they have not yet been assigned a place at a new school starting in September. This lack of a confirmed placement has caused significant anxiety for parents who emphasize the critical need for routine and a nurturing environment for their children's development.
The Education Authority (EA) has stated that the demand for SEN places consistently surpasses the available capacity. This situation means that families cannot always secure places at their preferred schools. The EA is actively working to find placements for all P4 transfer pupils and is consulting with parents regarding the needs of each child.
Nick Mathison, chair of Stormont's education committee, has described the situation as a 'complete failure' of planning by the EA. He highlighted that this issue is not new and should have been addressed proactively, given that SEN schools often end at P4, necessitating early planning for subsequent educational stages.
The EA acknowledged that capacity pressures are a serious concern and indicated that the Education Minister is pursuing a SEN capital investment program to address these challenges. Meanwhile, affected parents are anxiously awaiting updates, with some hearing that a possible update from the EA might not occur until the end of the month.
