Indian City Hosts Australia's First Offshore University Campus

Deakin University launched its inaugural offshore campus in India in 2024, situated within Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City). This pioneering institution, the first international university campus in India, initially welcomed 42 students. It currently offers postgraduate programs in business analytics and cybersecurity, with a faculty of eight members and 23 enrolled students for the current academic year.

The campus design and corporate look aim to integrate with the surrounding GIFT City environment. Students appreciate the active learning methods and a lower teacher-student ratio, which foster personalized teaching and greater faculty accessibility compared to larger Indian universities. The curriculum is adapted to industry demands, including an 80% attendance mandate, reflecting a blend of Indian and Australian educational philosophies.

While attracting students seeking international exposure, the campus also addresses parental concerns about placements and visas. Deakin's GIFT City campus conducted its first placement cycle in May last year, with seven students securing roles at the National Australian Bank. A two-week immersion program in Australia is also available, though currently on hold due to global uncertainties. The campus also features unique adaptations like a 'meditation room' and a cafeteria offering Indian cuisine, catering to student preferences.
