Assam Schools Shift Timings Amid Sweltering Heat

Education authorities in nine Assam districts, including Golaghat, Lakhimpur, Jorhat, Hojai, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, Nalbari, Nagaon, and Sribhumi, have implemented revised school timings. This adjustment is in response to the prevailing hot and humid weather conditions, with maximum temperatures in several areas surpassing 36°C and remaining over 4°C above normal.
The revised schedule is effective from Monday until further notice and applies to all government, provincialised, and recognised private schools within these districts. Typically, classes will now commence at 7:30 am and conclude by 12:30 pm. In Jorhat specifically, lower primary schools will operate from 8 am to noon, middle English and upper primary schools from 8 am to 12:30 pm, and high and higher secondary schools from 8 am to 1 pm.
School heads have been directed to ensure morning assemblies are conducted in shaded areas and to provide prompt medical attention to any students exhibiting heat-related symptoms. Additionally, institutions are instructed to ensure adequate drinking water is available through regular 'water bells', that electric fans are functional, and to restrict outdoor activities. Strict compliance with the revised timings and protective measures for students, including minimizing sun exposure, is mandatory.
