Albuquerque Public Schools (APS) is embarking on a significant campus renovation initiative, with Harrison Middle School in the South Valley leading the way. The initial phase of its extensive remodel includes a new cafeteria, gymnasium, kitchen, and dedicated spaces for band, orchestra, drama, and art programs. This modernization addresses urgent needs, such as a collapsed ceiling in a girls' bathroom during the previous school year.
The substantial project is financed by $30.3 million in general obligation bonds, approved by voters in 2021, supplemented by state matching funds. Future phases of school remodels will also seek voter approval. This investment is crucial as approximately half of APS's 140 campuses are over 40 years old and require updated infrastructure.
APS is consolidating and modernizing facilities across its district, focusing on essential systems like HVAC, security, and IT. Other campuses, including Hubert Humphrey and Valle Vista elementary schools, and Taylor and Van Buren middle schools, are also undergoing or preparing for similar renovations. These updates aim to create improved learning environments and provide a breath of fresh air for students and staff. The rebuild also supports local employment, as some students' fathers have contributed to the construction efforts, fostering a sense of community pride and investment in the South Valley.
