Albuquerque Public Schools is facing a lawsuit following a serious hand injury sustained by a 9-year-old special education student at Kirtland Elementary School. The incident occurred on May 15, 2024, when a substitute teacher reportedly left the classroom unattended to retrieve a cellphone.
While the class was unsupervised, a classmate allegedly shut a door on the student's hand, crushing his fingers. The student ran to the nurse's office, but the lawsuit claims the nurse, Amy Harris, did not adequately respond or call 911 until about 20 minutes after the incident, and only after being prompted by the student's father.
The student was transported to the University of New Mexico Hospital, where he underwent surgery for shattered bones and partial degloving of his middle and ring fingers. The lawsuit names APS, the substitute teacher (John Doe Anderson), Kelly Education, Principal Emily Key, and Nurse Harris, seeking damages for medical expenses and legal fees.
