Anne Arundel Schools Unveil Redistricting Plans to Ease Overcrowding

The Anne Arundel County Board of Education is taking steps to address overcrowding in several school clusters across the district. As part of Phase 2 of the comprehensive redistricting process, the board has announced a public briefing and two public hearings for community input.

The goal of the redistricting is to ease overcrowding in the Annapolis, Arundel, Broadneck, Crofton, Severna Park, South River, and Southern clusters. Six plans are currently under consideration, with four introduced at the board's September 17th meeting and two more added on October 15th.

Details on each of the six proposals are available on the AACPS website. The district staff will present the two most recent plans, Superintendent's Recommendation 3 (SR-3) and Board Recommendation 3 (BR-3), at a public briefing on October 23rd. The first public hearing is scheduled for October 27th, followed by a second hearing on November 3rd, where community members can provide feedback on the plans.

The BR-3 proposal, which builds on the SR-3 plan, would affect the fewest students, shifting around 700 students to different schools. The board's earlier proposals included amendments to keep certain neighborhoods at their current schools and allow high school juniors and seniors to remain in place.
