Andhra Pradesh has made history by becoming the first state in India to appoint dedicated counselors within its schools to bolster student mental health. This initiative, announced on March 23, 2026, by B. Srinivasa Rao, Director of Samagra Shiksha State Project, aims to place at least one counselor in every mandal.
These newly appointed counselors will play a vital role in identifying and addressing adolescent mental health challenges, such as those stemming from hormonal changes and emotional fluctuations. Their guidance is crucial for steering students toward positive behaviors and preventing serious issues like substance abuse and student suicides, often triggered by minor issues.
Mr. Rao encouraged counselors to act as "mental health doctors" at the grassroots level, fostering continuous support for students. He also announced that psychometric tests will be conducted in June for students in classes 8 and 9 to evaluate their intellectual abilities. The program aims to shape students into responsible citizens through dedicated support and collaboration with school staff.
