Alumni Welders Rebuild Their Beloved Island School
8 Feb
Summary
- Two alumni, now welders, are rebuilding their former school damaged by Fiona.
- The new school will accommodate 225 students and 56 pre-schoolers.
- Community members are excited and eagerly await the new school's completion.

Construction is underway for a new École Évangéline in Prince Edward Island's Évangéline Region, a project undertaken by alumni and welders Gilles Barriault and Craig Gallant. The original school, a community cornerstone since 1960, suffered extensive damage from post-tropical storm Fiona in 2022, necessitating a complete rebuild. Both Barriault and Gallant, former students, expressed deep satisfaction in contributing to their alma mater's reconstruction.
The new school is designed to house 225 students and 56 early years children, featuring a library and an Acadian and francophone arts and culture centre. Barriault noted that the storm damage rendered the old building irreparable. As steel structures rise, community members are visibly enthusiastic, frequently inquiring about the construction's progress and eagerly anticipating the school's completion.
