Marie will be launching a pioneering Master of Psychotherapy program, designed to tackle the pressing mental health and addiction issues facing northern Ontario. The new curriculum, set to accept applications until December 15, 2025, will train future psychotherapists with a focus on clinical skills and practical learning.

The program's planning lead, Teryn Bruni, explains that the university has heard concerns from graduates about feeling unprepared for therapeutic sessions with patients. To address this, the program will provide early exposure to field work in the Sault and surrounding area, ensuring students are well-versed in professional ethics and theoretical foundations before entering practice.

Bruni is hopeful the new program will encourage individuals from the north to train locally and stay in the region, expanding the currently "overworked" mental health workforce. The faculty currently includes three full-time instructors, including a registered psychologist, psychotherapist, and Indigenous social worker, and plans to hire more.
