On the evening of February 25, 2026, undergraduate students at AIIMS-Nagpur reported discovering insects in their hostel mess dinner. Allegations circulating via social media included finding a deep-fried caterpillar, a dead insect on fruit, and sponge-like material in mushroom curry. Some students claimed they or their friends had consumed parts of the contaminated meals, raising health concerns.
The AIIMS administration stated that no formal complaints were filed, with allegations initially surfacing on social media. Nevertheless, an inquiry has been launched to ascertain the facts. An official confirmed that AIIMS Nagpur adheres to a strict "zero tolerance" policy on hygiene, and the recently appointed mess contractor, who began on February 1, 2026, would face decisive action if found culpable.
Sources indicated that the student council had not received or filed any complaints. While the administration acknowledged overcrowding due to limited dining space and understaffed counters, potentially contributing to the situation, they also noted the possibility of "mischief." Measures such as daily deep cleaning, staff medical check-ups, and pest control are reportedly in place to ensure hygiene standards.
