Suresh Kumar, a 51-year-old diagnostics industry professional, has finally secured an undergraduate medical seat at Government Medical College and Hospital in Nagapattinam. This achievement comes over three decades after he first sought admission, fulfilling a dream deferred since 1992.
Kumar was admitted under the persons with disabilities quota with a score of 192 out of 720. He previously earned an MBA and two doctorates, building a successful career in pharmacology. Inspired by the Supreme Court's removal of an age limit for medical admissions, he diligently prepared for the NEET exam for approximately 1.5 years.
Kumar, originally from Velankanni in Nagapattinam district, plans to reside with his mother and commute to college by bicycle. His family, including his wife and children, fully supports his educational pursuit. He intends to pursue postgraduate medical studies after completing his MBBS, with no firm decision yet between clinical practice and diagnostics.
Health minister K G Arunraj reported that 614 candidates were allotted seats under the 7.5% quota for government school students. Additional seats in newly affiliated colleges are expected to be included in the second round of counseling.
