Forty promising high school students from Charlotte, DeSoto, Manatee, and Sarasota counties have been honored as 2026 Selby Scholars by the William G. and Marie Selby Foundation.
Each scholar will receive a renewable scholarship award of up to $7,000 per year, determined by individual financial need. These students were chosen for their academic preparedness, resourcefulness, grit, and dedication to helping others.
Notably, twenty-five of the selected scholars are first-generation college students. Their chosen majors span a wide range of disciplines, preparing them for diverse careers in fields such as Chemistry, Astrophysics, Global Business, Neuroscience, and Urban Planning.
The rigorous selection process involved community volunteers, including youth organization representatives, higher education professionals, and Selby Scholar alumni, who conducted both applications and interviews.
Throughout their college journey, Selby Scholars benefit from unique opportunities. These include networking events for sharing experiences, mentor matching with industry professionals, and workshops focused on essential skills like mental wellness, financial literacy, and time management.
The Selby Foundation, established in 1955, continues the legacy of Bill and Marie Selby by supporting educational opportunities through capital grants to nonprofits and scholarships to deserving students. More information is available at SelbyFdn.org.
