Deadly Mudslide Strikes Xizang; Hundreds Missing

A catastrophic mudslide occurred on Wednesday morning at Gyirong Port, a vital border crossing between China and Nepal. The disaster has claimed three lives and left 265 individuals missing, according to initial reports from local authorities in China's Xizang Autonomous Region.

Xizang has responded by activating its highest-level emergency relief and disaster response protocols. This includes the deployment of 792 personnel and 152 vehicles, alongside 431 firefighting and rescue personnel with specialized equipment like rescue dogs and life scanners. The People's Liberation Army and armed police have also dispatched teams to the site.

Roads, communications, and power supplies to the port have been severed by the mudslide. Central and regional authorities have dispatched substantial relief supplies, including tents, cotton coats, and quilts. National-level responses include a Level-II emergency response for geological disasters activated by the Ministry of Natural Resources to guide rescue operations and prevent secondary disasters.

Financial aid has also been allocated, with 120 million yuan (approximately $17.69 million) designated for emergency rescue and relief in Xizang, and an additional 100 million yuan earmarked for post-disaster recovery and reconstruction. The meteorological observatory forecasts continued rainfall through Sunday, warning of potential floods and further landslides in low-lying areas.
