In Barcelona, a 46-year-old woman tragically passed away on Friday after being struck by a piece of warehouse roof that was dislodged by severe gales. This incident occurred as the Iberian Peninsula experienced its eighth storm of the year, bringing relentless heavy rain, thunder, snow, and powerful winds.
These storms have caused extensive damage across Spain and Portugal, affecting infrastructure and agricultural lands. Spanish Agriculture Minister Luis Planas highlighted the extraordinary nature of this storm succession, noting that approximately 14,000 hectares of berries, citrus fruit, olives, and other crops have been damaged. Spain has seen 38% more rainfall than average since October.
Authorities are implementing emergency measures, including evacuations. In Coimbra, Portugal, officials warned of major flooding, with up to 9,000 people potentially needing evacuation from low-lying areas. Schools and the University of Coimbra were closed, and businesses advised remote work. Similarly, 3,100 people were evacuated in Andalusia, Spain, where schools were also closed in 22 towns.
