29 Aug
Summary
- A 60-year-old woman suffered severe injuries on an alpine coaster.
- She was ejected from her seat and dragged while still strapped in.
- State authorities are investigating the August 17, 2026 incident.

A 60-year-old woman sustained critical injuries on the Rocky Mountain Coaster at Copper Mountain Resort on Monday, August 17, 2026. Her attorney stated she was ejected from her seat and subsequently dragged for 20 to 30 seconds along the track while still secured by her seat belt. The ordeal left her with a broken rib, a collapsed lung, a traumatic brain injury, and a dislocated shoulder requiring surgery.
The woman's husband was riding behind her and had to assist in her extraction from the track, approximately 15 to 20 feet above the ground, as resort staff were not immediately present. A sign near the attraction indicates that the cart is designed to stop and beep if a seat belt becomes disconnected.
Colorado's Division of Oil and Public Safety is actively investigating the incident. As a result, the Rocky Mountain Coaster is currently closed, and a similar ride at Purgatory Resort has also been temporarily shut down pending the investigation's outcome. The manufacturer has been instructed to issue a safety bulletin to all operators.
The resort has expressed well wishes for the guest's recovery. The roller coaster, billed as the second-longest alpine coaster in North America, remains closed while the investigation proceeds. Official documentation related to the incident will not be released until the investigation is complete.
