A woman has been found severely injured after a terrifying encounter with a bear in the forests of India's Chamoli district. Rameshwari Devi, 50, was collecting grass for livestock when she was attacked and left for dead, spending an entire night alone. She was eventually discovered by a search party, who heard her cries for help, approximately 2.5 miles from the nearest road.
Devi was found in a critical state with extensive wounds to her face and head. Following initial first aid at a community health center, she was airlifted to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rishikesh for specialized treatment. Authorities have since directed forest officials to enhance patrols in areas known for bear activity.
This incident highlights a growing concern for wildlife encounters, as it follows other recent bear attacks, including one on children and teachers during a school trip in Canada. Residents in the affected regions are being provided with safety equipment to deter potential animal encounters.
