Summary
- Man broke collar bone after wheelchair hit a pothole.
- He was 62 days into a charity trip from Land's End.
- The journey aimed to raise funds for assistance dogs.
Peter Smorthit, on a 1700-mile charity trip from Land's End to John O' Groats and back, suffered a broken collar bone when his wheelchair struck a significant pothole in Staffordshire. The incident occurred on the A520 in Cheddleton, where a wheel of his trailer became lodged in the hole, causing him to be thrown from his chair.
Smorthit, who was 62 days into his journey and had 300 miles remaining, described the pothole as "a crater on the moon." He was on his way from Leek to Hixon when the accident happened. Passers-by assisted him, and he was taken to Royal Stoke hospital, where he praised the "absolutely brilliant" NHS staff.
Despite this setback and past health challenges, Smorthit expressed determination to complete his challenge for Canine Partners, a charity that provides assistance dogs. He has not yet decided whether to restart the journey or continue from his current location.
