Following powerful earthquakes in Venezuela that registered magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, rescue operations focused on a survivor heard in the rubble of La Guaira. Barbara Palacios experienced a mix of hope and despair as her husband, Jonathan Suarez, was located but difficult to extract.
The disaster, which struck on Wednesday evening, resulted in over 1,400 fatalities and left an estimated 50,000 people unaccounted for. La Guaira, a former beach resort town, was heavily impacted, with rescue efforts underway for two days before the critical window for finding survivors closed.
Initial rescue attempts were slow, prompting Palacios and relatives of other trapped individuals to block roads to demand assistance. This led to the arrival of civil defense, firefighters, and volunteers, who worked tirelessly by hand.
Later, heavy machinery arrived, significantly speeding up the debris removal. Foreign aid, including 25 Mexican soldiers with sniffer dogs, joined the search. Despite their efforts, including six hours of work after Jonathan's voice was heard, he was not successfully rescued by Saturday.
Palacios remained by the site, unable to accept the grim reality as the search continued into the night and the following day.
