Venezuela Quakes: Hundreds Dead, Thousands Missing

Powerful back-to-back earthquakes, a magnitude 7.2 and a 7.5, struck Venezuela on Wednesday evening. The seismic events resulted in collapsed buildings and a significant loss of life, with hundreds confirmed dead and thousands more unaccounted for across the northern parts of the country.

Governments, humanitarian organizations, and members of the Venezuelan diaspora globally are coordinating efforts to assist the affected population. Aid is being mobilized for urgent search and rescue operations, emergency shelter for displaced families, and essential medical care, followed by provisions for safe water and sanitation.

Humanitarian groups face logistical hurdles, including potential airport closures and the necessity for expedited visas for aid workers. Organizations like Global Empowerment Mission, CORE, Direct Relief, International Red Cross, Airlink, World Central Kitchen, Catholic Relief Services, and Global Impact are actively involved in providing relief and support to the earthquake-stricken regions.

Many of these organizations have prior experience in Venezuela or in responding to major disaster events. They are focusing on delivering food, water, hygiene supplies, medical necessities, cash support, and hot meals, while the Venezuelan Red Cross continues to deliver care through its network despite damage to its national headquarters.
