The devastating twin earthquakes that struck Venezuela last month have resulted in a death toll surpassing 4,800. The powerful 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude tremors hit the country on June 24, causing widespread destruction, particularly in the coastal state of La Guaira, north of the capital Caracas.
As of Wednesday, the National Assembly chief reported the grim figure of 4,829 fatalities. Rescue workers and grieving family members continue their arduous search for victims trapped under the rubble of collapsed structures, even three weeks after the initial seismic events.
The disaster has left a significant number of survivors displaced, with at least 20,857 people currently residing in overcrowded camps. These makeshift settlements are reportedly suffering from a lack of basic amenities, including inadequate water supplies and proper sanitation systems.
