On October 4, 2025, Universal Orlando Resort will reopen the Stardust Racers Coaster at its Epic Universe theme park, just over two weeks after a tragic incident on the ride.
On September 17, 2025, 32-year-old Kevin Rodriguez Zavala died while riding the Stardust Racers Coaster. Following an extensive review, Universal found that the ride "functioned properly throughout the boarding process, the duration of the ride, and upon the ride vehicle's return to the station."
In a letter to employees, Universal Orlando Resort President and COO Karen Irwin expressed her deepest condolences to Zavala's family and loved ones. She also praised the professionalism and compassion shown by the Universal team during and after the incident.
The reopening of the Stardust Racers Coaster comes after Universal conducted a comprehensive technical and operational review, working closely with local officials and the State of Florida. The ride's manufacturer and an independent roller coaster engineering expert also conducted on-site testing of the vehicle.
Irwin stated that she is confident Universal will continue to deliver extraordinary guest experiences at its destination. The company has updated its Safety and Accessibility Guidelines following Zavala's death, no longer allowing team members to accommodate riders who use wheelchairs on the Stardust Racers Coaster.
