A severe thunderstorm on Monday evening caused a house fire in Emersons Green, a suburb east of Bristol. The detached property was engulfed in flames shortly before 6pm following a lightning strike. Firefighters from Avon Fire and Rescue Service were called to the scene at 5:55pm and managed to bring the blaze under control by 10pm. Although the occupants escaped without injury, one person near the scene sustained an unrelated injury and was attended to by paramedics. The fire is believed to have been caused by the lightning strike.
Concurrently, the electrical storm impacted air travel, leading to flight cancellations at Bristol Airport as engineers investigated a fault with air traffic control systems. In Somerset, storms brought intense rainfall, with over 23,000 lightning strikes recorded and up to 35 mm of rain causing localized flooding in areas like Bath. Flood alerts were issued for parts of Somerset near Shepton Mallet and Glastonbury due to rising river levels.
These storms have not offered relief from the ongoing hot weather. The Met Office forecasts temperatures will climb towards 39C in the coming days. A rare red weather warning for extreme heat is in effect from Wednesday morning until Thursday night across six regions of England, with temperatures potentially reaching 40C. This heatwave poses a significant risk to life, even for healthy individuals. Schools across England have begun closing early or entirely in anticipation of the extreme temperatures.
