UK Firefighters Battle Venezuela Quake Carnage
11 Jul
Summary
- Two Lincolnshire firefighters were deployed to Venezuela post-earthquake.
- They witnessed widespread structural collapse and devastation.
- The UK sent 68 personnel and six search dogs to aid in recovery efforts.

Two firefighters from Lincolnshire, Darren Burchnall and Martin Lang, were part of the UK International Search and Rescue (UK ISAR) team deployed to Venezuela after severe earthquakes struck the nation on June 24. The firefighters arrived on June 27 and worked in the La Guaira and La Llanada areas.
They described the scene as "carnage everywhere," with extensive damage to nearly all buildings. Many structures, some as tall as 15 stories, suffered catastrophic "pancake collapses." The UK's response included 68 personnel, encompassing specialists in firefighting, medicine, engineering, and veterinary services, supported by six search dogs.
Despite facing intense heat and humidity, the team conducted hundreds of building searches and structural assessments. They expressed pride in their involvement, though Martin Lang noted the heartbreaking reality of being unable to reach some survivors in time due to the immense debris. The earthquakes have resulted in over 4,000 deaths and left at least 20,000 people homeless.
