A significant fine of 350,000 pounds has been imposed on UK Athletics, the governing body for British track and field. The organization pleaded guilty to corporate manslaughter following the death of Paralympian Abdullah Hayayei.
Hayayei, 36, tragically lost his life on July 11, 2017, when a metal practice cage collapsed during his training session at Newham Leisure Centre in east London. He was preparing to represent the United Arab Emirates.
The judge described the death as "tragic, untimely and wholly avoidable." Keith Davies, 79, who headed sport for the 2017 world para athletics championships, was ordered to perform 175 hours of unpaid work after admitting a health and safety offense. The court noted Davies knew or should have known about equipment issues due to a prior identical cage collapse.
