Two teenage boys tragically lost their lives on Sunday after drowning in the Hooghly River near Mousi Ghat in Burrabazar, Kolkata. The victims, identified as 13-year-olds Mohammad Islam from Bihar and Abdul Sadique from South 24 Parganas, were students at the Jamalia Arabia Madrasha.
The incident unfolded around 7:00 a.m. when the two minors, accompanied by a 38-year-old madrasa resident, Md Gulab Rabbani, entered the river to bathe. Strong currents overwhelmed them, leading to the drowning. While locals managed to rescue Rabbani, the teenagers were pulled under and went missing.
A Kolkata Police Disaster Management Group (DMG) team launched a search operation and successfully retrieved both unconscious bodies around 8:35 a.m. They were transported to Medical College & Hospital, where they were pronounced dead. Unnatural Death cases have been registered, and post-mortem examinations conducted. Police have reissued warnings to citizens about the dangers of the river's hazardous stretches.
