A devastating week for Queensland's mining sector has seen two men lose their lives in separate, tragic incidents involving rockfalls and mine collapses. The first fatality occurred on Friday afternoon at a private mining lease in Mount Britton, near Nebo. A 58-year-old prospector was fatally injured when a large rock dislodged from a face, crushing his leg as he worked near his excavator.
Tragically, hours later, another worker was found deceased a kilometer below ground at the Curragh Complex near Blackwater. This incident involved an abrupt roof collapse at the Mammoth Underground Mine. The company expressed deep sorrow and offered support to the victim's family and colleagues, emphasizing that mine safety remains their highest priority.
Both incidents are now under investigation by relevant authorities. Resources Safety and Health Queensland confirmed its awareness of the Mount Britton fatality and has begun its inquiries, noting the deceased was working alone. The police will also compile reports for the coroner regarding both events, aiming to understand the circumstances of these fatal accidents.
