A tragic head-on collision occurred on Friday, March 6, on Interstate 85 South near Concord, resulting in two fatalities. The incident happened shortly after 5 a.m. around mile marker 49, between Interstate 485 and Poplar Tent Road. Investigations revealed that a 25-year-old driver, operating a blue Ford Focus, entered the interstate traveling in the wrong direction from Exit 49.
This vehicle then collided head-on with a red Hyundai Santa Fe, driven by a 54-year-old, in the leftmost southbound lane. Both drivers were pronounced deceased at the scene. Authorities are investigating whether impairment was a contributing factor to the crash. The Medical Examiner's Office will determine this.
Following the initial fatal crash, three additional secondary collisions were reported. Two other individuals were transported to the hospital with minor injuries. All southbound lanes of I-85 were impacted, with significant closures near Exit 52 for Poplar Tent Road. The leftmost lane remained closed into the evening.
