24 Oct
Summary
- Two young cousins drowned in a local pond on Saturday afternoon.
- The pond's recent renovation had increased its depth.
- Rescuers rushed the boys to the hospital, but they were declared dead.
Two cousins, Rudra Das, aged 14, and Debarghya Das, aged 12, tragically drowned in a pond in Barasat on Saturday afternoon. The boys, residents of Vidyasagar Palli, had gone to play and decided to bathe in the Ramkrishnapalli pond afterward.
Locals reported that the pond had recently been renovated, increasing its depth. Neither of the cousins could swim, and tragically, they slipped into deeper water as no one else was present. A nearby resident spotted the incident and alerted others.
Emergency services, including police and the fire brigade, along with locals, initiated a search. The father of one of the boys also desperately entered the water. After a lengthy search, the boys were found and transported to Barasat Medical College and Hospital, where they were declared deceased.
The incident has cast a shadow of grief over the neighborhood. There was also local anger regarding the alleged delay in the disaster management team's arrival. The bodies were sent for post-mortem examination.
