Coroner Warns of Silence in Turkey Drowning Case
30 Apr
Summary
- Man drowned day into holiday in Antalya, Turkey.
- Official cause of death remains unknown, no suspicion raised.
- Coroner criticizes Turkish authorities for lack of information.

A coroner has informed the family of Paul McDonald that they may never discover the full circumstances surrounding his drowning death in Turkey. Mr. McDonald, 57, from Harlow, tragically passed away on September 6, just one day into his holiday in Antalya. His wife discovered him face down in the sea, and despite attempts at CPR and subsequent hospitalization, he never regained consciousness, succumbing to his injuries nine days later.
The inquest, held at Essex Coroner's Court, heard that the official cause of Mr. McDonald's death is unknown, although the coroner stressed there was no suspicion of foul play. However, the court has received minimal information from Turkish authorities. The coroner has previously voiced concerns about the lack of detail provided by Turkish officials regarding the deaths of British citizens in the country. She warned the family that obtaining information could be a protracted and potentially fruitless process, suggesting it is unlikely any details will be forthcoming from Turkey.
