Kumbh Mela Town Plunged into Darkness, Water Crisis Looms
28 Jul
Summary
- Trimbakeshwar suffered a four-day power outage due to heavy rain.
- The blackout caused a severe drinking water crisis for residents.
- Concerns grow over infrastructure readiness for the 2027 Kumbh Mela.

Trimbakeshwar, slated to host the Simhastha Kumbh Mela in 2027, faced a significant challenge as a four-day power outage disrupted daily life. Heavy rains and strong winds damaged the town's power infrastructure, leaving approximately 80% without electricity. This outage severely impacted the drinking water supply, with residents experiencing a complete lack of civic water for four consecutive days.
The prolonged blackout has sparked serious concerns about Trimbakeshwar's preparedness for the massive influx of pilgrims expected for the Parva Snan in July and August 2027. Residents have voiced their frustration over the administrative failures, particularly the lack of alternative water supply arrangements. Officials stated that emergency measures were implemented, including the use of smaller water-lifting systems and tanker distribution with NGO support.
The Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL) cited adverse weather, difficult terrain, and equipment failure for the extended disruption. A damaged transformer and subsequent logistical issues in replacing it, including a vehicle getting stuck in mud, caused significant delays. The power utility is now reviewing long-term solutions to enhance infrastructure resilience and prevent future prolonged outages.
