Holiday Horror: 3 Hours In, Tourist Faces Huge Medical Debt
14 Apr
Summary
- British tourist Alex Muncey is hospitalized in Sri Lanka after a motorbike crash.
- His travel insurance failed to cover the 250cc motorbike he rented.
- A GoFundMe has been set up to cover an estimated £40,000 medical bill.

A British tourist's "trip of a lifetime" took a devastating turn just three hours after arriving in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Alex Muncey, 33, was involved in a motorbike crash allegedly caused by a lorry overtaking on a blind bend. He suffered a brain bleed, fractures to his right arm, and four fractures in his right leg, requiring extensive medical treatment and surgery.
While Alex had travel insurance, it was invalidated because he rented a 250cc motorbike, which his policy did not cover. His partner, Helen Garrod, and his family have established a GoFundMe page to raise funds for his mounting medical expenses, which are estimated to reach £40,000. This sum does not include the cost of a medically equipped flight home, which could add another £30,000 to £40,000.
