Residents in parts of southwest Michigan were urged to take immediate cover on Friday afternoon due to the threat of tornadoes. The National Weather Service detected a severe thunderstorm near Colon, moving northeast at 40 mph, which was capable of producing tornadoes and 60 mph winds.
This storm system had reportedly already produced tornadoes and caused damage in the Three Rivers area. Social media showed footage of a twister damaging structures, including ripping the roof off a store and tearing apart a storage unit. Flying debris posed a significant danger, with mobile homes expected to be damaged or destroyed, and roofs, windows, and vehicles at risk.
The warning was in effect for St. Joseph and Branch counties as of Friday afternoon. A severe thunderstorm warning was also issued for parts of Calhoun County, anticipating potential tornadoes and quarter-sized hail. The National Weather Service advised that another round of storms could occur overnight Friday into early Saturday morning.
