A toddler is in critical but stable condition after being shot in the head by another child who found an unsecured gun in a Texas home. The incident occurred on a Friday afternoon in Channelview, near Houston, during a family gathering. While adults were in the living room, two young boys were in a bedroom where the shooting took place. The two-year-old victim was alert and speaking when airlifted to the hospital for surgery and is expected to recover.
The firearm reportedly belonged to a 25-year-old visitor, Santiago Daniel Canet, who was among those at the home. Authorities stated the gun was not stored properly and was accessible to children. Canet has since been arrested and charged with making a firearm accessible to a minor.
Sheriff Ed Gonzalez emphasized the importance of safe firearm storage, noting this incident followed another child shooting that same day. He urged gun owners to secure their firearms, especially in homes with children, stressing that responsible storage can save lives. Child Protective Services may also be involved in the ongoing investigation.
