Magnitude 5.0 Earthquake Strikes Northern Tibet
27 Aug
Summary
- A magnitude 5.0 earthquake occurred in northern Tibet late Thursday.
- The earthquake had a depth of 10 km.
- China activated a Level-IV flood response in Tibet due to potential barrier lake breaches.
A magnitude 5.0 earthquake was registered in China's Tibet region late Thursday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences. The seismic activity occurred at a depth of 10 kilometers in the northern part of Tibet.
This earthquake's epicenter was situated significantly north of the regions in Nepal and China that recently experienced a devastating flash flood. That flood resulted in numerous casualties and over a thousand people missing.
Separately, China's national earthquake networks reported a magnitude 4.7 quake in Nagqu, Tibet, on Wednesday. In response to the flood risks, China has initiated a Level-IV flood response in Tibet, prompted by the threat of a barrier lake breach. The Ministry of Water Resources is monitoring the lake and rainfall, dispatching an expert team to Gyirong county.
