Tragedy struck Cumbum in the Theni district when a blast at a firecracker unit resulted in the deaths of two young workers. The victims, identified as Dinesh, 23, and Surya Prabhu, 21, both residents of Cumbum, lost their lives in the incident. The blast occurred around 9:30 am on Saturday, originating from a chemical mixing room within the "Lakshmi Fireworks" unit. This unit was licensed and operated under the name Muthulakshmi. Investigators believe the explosion was triggered when the room, which had been closed for a week, was opened more rapidly than usual. The force of the blast caused immediate fatalities, with no other injuries reported. Responding swiftly, police and fire services from Uthamapalayam and Cumbum stations worked to control the blaze, successfully dousing it within half an hour. A case has been filed by the Cumbum North Police, and an investigation is actively ongoing to ascertain the precise cause of the explosion. The bodies of the deceased workers were transported to Theni Government Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination.
