A catastrophic crane collapse in northeastern Thailand on Wednesday morning led to a devastating train derailment, claiming at least 31 lives and injuring 64 passengers. The incident occurred in Sikhio district, Nakhon Ratchasima province, when a construction crane, working on an elevated high-speed rail project, fell onto two carriages of a passing train.
The accident happened on a train en route from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani, with 195 people on board. Images from the scene showed overturned carriages and firefighters battling a blaze as smoke billowed from the wreckage. Rescue workers were observed extracting casualties from the mangled train. The construction is part of a significant rail project connecting Bangkok to Kunming, China, via Laos.
Italian-Thai Development Public Company Limited, the contractor for the project segment, expressed deep regret and committed to providing compensation to the victims' families. This incident follows a previous structural collapse in Bangkok involving the same company. Investigations are ongoing to determine the precise cause of the crane's failure, with the Thai government emphasizing the importance of safety in ongoing infrastructure development.
