Texas Floods: 2 Dead, Rescues Underway

Torrential rains have resulted in two fatalities in Texas, as floodwaters swept away vehicles carrying the victims. Governor Greg Abbott stated on Thursday afternoon that the state is preparing for "record-shattering" rainfall within the next 24 hours.

Emergency services have performed 230 rescues, including a dramatic helicopter extraction of a man and his dog from a truck. Texas has mobilized 2,350 emergency responders and 1,400 pieces of equipment, such as Black Hawk helicopters and swiftwater rescue boats, to mitigate potential loss of life.

This response aims to prevent a tragedy similar to last year, when floods in the same region killed at least 135 people, including many children at a summer camp. The National Weather Service has recorded 10 to 20 inches of rain in the Texas Hill Country over the past two days.

Governor Abbott identified the recent victims as a man in an RV and a woman whose car was overtaken by floodwaters. He implored citizens to avoid travel until storms subside, expected late Friday. Approximately 125 roadway sections have been impacted, with 87 closed, including a bridge damaged by a barge.
