Tragedy struck in Alès, southern France, when a Peugeot 207 carrying three teenagers veered off the road and crashed into a private swimming pool. The teens, aged 14, 15, and 19, were unable to escape the submerged vehicle and drowned. Firefighters recovered the car, finding nitrous oxide canisters, some still full, alongside alcohol and cannabis.
The public prosecutor confirmed the car's width prevented the doors from opening, trapping the occupants. Investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause, with initial findings suggesting seatbelt use was neglected by some. A full medical examination will check for nitrous oxide ingestion by the driver.
Adding to the grim discovery, the victims were known to authorities for drug dealing. The 15-year-old had recently been in police custody for drug trafficking. Nitrous oxide, commonly known as 'laughing gas,' has seen increased recreational use and is now a Class C drug in the UK due to related fatalities and accidents.
