Four teenagers, aged 15 to 19, were rescued early Monday morning by Lions Bay Search and Rescue after becoming stranded on a challenging mountain trail. The group had set out on the 15.6-kilometer trek to Mount Unnecessary with an elevation gain of 1,122 meters, intending to watch the sunset and descend in the dark using only their cell phone flashlights.
Despite warnings of rain and cold temperatures, the hikers were inadequately dressed in hoodies and sweatpants. Their initial location was difficult to pinpoint, with families unsure of their exact plans. The teenagers eventually called for help after eight hours on the trail, north of Mount Unnecessary, after starting their hike around 2 p.m. from the Cypress Parking lot.
Fortunately, a nearby camping couple assisted the stranded hikers, providing warmth and shelter by a campfire. Lions Bay Search and Rescue extracted the group at 1:45 a.m. The rescue team emphasized the critical importance of thorough trip planning, proper training, and carrying essential equipment, strongly discouraging the use of social media and cell phone lights for navigation in such conditions.
