A 16-year-old boy, Zachary Jacob Crandall, lost his life on August 19 following a significant fall while hiking in Alta, Utah. The incident occurred on the challenging Devil's Castle trail, a four-mile loop known for its steep elevation gain. Zachary was scrambling with three companions when he fell several hundred feet.
Salt Lake County Sheriff's Search and Rescue, along with multiple other agencies, responded to the scene. A bystander's quick call to 911 facilitated a rapid response. Tragically, paramedics confirmed Zachary was deceased upon reaching him. Rescuers then ensured the safety of his companions, who were monitored and escorted off the mountain.
Authorities are sharing this incident to raise awareness about the risks associated with scrambling, particularly on exposed routes like Devil's Castle. They emphasize that such terrain can be deceptively dangerous, and a simple slip can have severe consequences. Hikers are advised to thoroughly understand the terrain and their group's capabilities.
In Zachary's memory, his family has initiated a GoFundMe campaign to establish a scholarship in his name. The fundraiser has already garnered over $15,000 from numerous donors. The scholarship aims to reflect Zach's life and values. He is survived by his parents, brother, and beloved pets.
