A high school football game in Swift Current, Saskatchewan, on Thursday ended abruptly due to a severe injury to Balgonie Greenall Griffins player Hunter Gronick. Gronick was taken by ambulance to the emergency room after collapsing on the field with what was diagnosed as a major brain bleed.
Following a CT scan, Hunter was transferred by STARS Air Ambulance to Regina, where he underwent emergency surgery. Doctors removed a portion of his skull to allow his brain room to heal from swelling and bleeding. The surgery was successful, according to his family.
As of Friday, Gronick was in the surgical intensive care unit, under anesthesia. Doctors are gradually reducing his medication, hoping he will regain consciousness independently. His family is awaiting updates on his condition and recovery, appreciating the outpouring of community support.
