In Mumbai, a tragic accident occurred recently when a 17-year-old Dubai resident, visiting for Eid celebrations, struck a scooter with a rental SUV in Chandivli. The collision resulted in the death of 15-year-old Pratik Mane, who was riding pillion. The juvenile driver fled the scene but was apprehended within hours by the Sakinaka police.
Authorities faced initial deception from the driver's family, who claimed he had left the area. However, he was found hiding in a relative's residence in Chandivli. The teen driver has been produced before the Juvenile Justice Board and remanded to a correctional home until March 27.
Further investigation is underway concerning Mohammed Anas Moharramalli Khan, a 22-year-old MBBS student who rented the SUV. He has been served a notice, and his role in the incident is being probed. The victim, Pratik Mane, was rushed to Rajawadi hospital but was declared dead on arrival due to severe head injuries. His family consists of an auto driver father and a domestic help mother.
This incident highlights a recurring issue in Chandivli, with a local welfare association member noting a previous similar accident involving a juvenile driver. Concerns have been raised about the lack of strict legal action against guardians who permit minors to drive, leading to a demand for stricter consequences for car owners facilitating such behavior.
