Summary

- The fatal accident occurred when another vehicle rear-ended the teen's ATV.
- Michigan law prohibits ATVs on public roads, with limited exceptions.

A 15-year-old Detroit teenager, Dylan Burkett, tragically lost his life in an ATV crash on Sunday around 8 PM. The fatal incident took place just two days after his birthday and followed a significant argument with his father, James Burkett, concerning his refusal to wear a helmet.
The collision happened at the intersection of 6 Mile Road and Kinloch Street when another vehicle rear-ended Dylan's ATV. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the accident.
Michigan law explicitly bans the operation of ATVs on public roads, streets, and highways. While 15-year-olds are permitted to cross roadways on ATVs, it must be under the direct visual supervision of an adult, which was not the case during the incident.
James Burkett expressed his profound grief, recounting his earlier confrontation with his son about safety precautions. The father's pleas for his son to wear a helmet were met with Dylan leaving to ride his ATV, leading to the devastating outcome.
The driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash remained at the scene and is cooperating with the ongoing investigation. Law enforcement has not indicated any suspicion of wrongdoing on the driver's part. Community members have expressed shock, and a GoFundMe has been established to support the grieving family.
