- First responders urge caution with social media challenges and flammable items.

A 14-year-old girl from the Pittsburgh area is in critical condition at UPMC Mercy's Burn Center following a severe burn incident. The injury occurred last Friday evening at an apartment complex in Pitcairn. The teen was reportedly attempting to replicate a dangerous viral challenge seen on TikTok.
During the stunt, she used isopropyl alcohol, commonly known as rubbing alcohol, in an attempt to 'breathe fire.' This resulted in serious burns to her face, neck, and chest. Fire officials stated there was no active fire upon their arrival, but the girl was intubated as of Sunday due to her injuries.
Fire Chief Tommy Dick emphasized the extreme danger of such stunts, noting that ingesting or attempting to ignite flammable liquids can be fatal. First responders are issuing a strong warning to teenagers and their parents about the risks associated with social media trends. They are urging families to discuss fire safety and the dangers posed by household items like alcohols, nail polish removers, and hair sprays. Police have not yet commented on whether an investigation or charges are pending.
