A tanker vessel, identified as the Olympic Life, reported an external explosion on its port side approximately 60 nautical miles off the coast of Muscat, Oman. The incident occurred on Tuesday, May 26th. The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO) confirmed the event.
While the vessel and its crew were reported safe following the blast, the tanker experienced a discharge of bunker fuel into the sea. The cause of the explosion and the exact nature of the unidentified object that struck the ship remain unknown.
MarineTraffic data indicated the Greek-owned Very Large Crude Carrier was en route out of the Gulf of Oman at the time and was not carrying cargo. The ship's technical manager confirmed damage to a bunker tank and a subsequent oil sheen, which has since been contained.
The vessel is owned by Olympic Shipping & Management, a company with historical ties to shipping magnate Aristotle Onassis.
