One week after severe earthquakes struck Venezuela, the Tallahassee community has united in support. Local establishment VeneBites and students from Florida State University's Venezuelan Student Association (VSA) are spearheading relief efforts.
The earthquakes, registering magnitudes of 7.2 and 7.5, caused widespread devastation, resulting in over 2,200 confirmed fatalities and thousands more unaccounted for. Search and rescue operations are actively ongoing.
The VSA, with assistance from the Hispanic/Latine Student Union (HLSU), has organized a successful donation drive. Items collected include non-perishable foods, first-aid supplies, pain relievers, personal hygiene products, and gently used clothing.
A fundraising "Vene Bingo Night" is scheduled for Saturday, July 18, at VeneBites restaurant. Proceeds from bingo cards, priced at up to $5 each, will directly benefit Venezuelan families impacted by the earthquakes. The event aims to sell at least 200 cards.
Lida Yajure and Abraham Quintero, owners of VeneBites, are active volunteers. Additionally, the Miami-based "I Love Venezuela Foundation" has initiated a GoFundMe campaign, raising $6.2 million toward a $7 million goal for emergency relief.
