Two separate fires were reported Saturday at the Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville, Maryland, prompting an arson investigation by the State Fire Marshal's Office. Fire crews responded to the incidents around 8 a.m. at two vacant buildings located at 1121 and 1123 2nd Street on the hospital grounds.
The Springfield Hospital Center, operated by the Maryland Department of Health, has a long history dating back to its opening in 1896. It continues to provide essential clinical services for individuals with mental illnesses, with admissions managed through referrals from other hospitals or state and local courts.
Beyond its clinical role, the hospital also serves as an educational institution, offering internships and training to nearly 200 mental health professionals annually. Notably, sections of the hospital's women's facility were added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2000, recognizing the Warfield Complex, Hubner, and T Buildings as a historic district.
